Nobody saw her leave. I didn’t either. I noticed a few minutes later, when I turned towards the corner where she had been standing and found it empty.

It was the sort of party described as intimate, although there must have been eighty people in the room. She was not the most famous person there, but people kept finding their way back to her. She was good at being present without making a performance of it.

At around eleven, she was suddenly gone.

She had not made a round of the room to say goodbye. There was no announcement about an early morning, and no final conversation at the door with her coat already on. She had simply left.

For a while, the party carried on as before. Then the energy changed. People began mentioning early starts. A few guests went looking for their things. I noticed the host glance towards the corner where she had been.

It may have happened anyway. Parties have natural dips, and it was getting late. Still, the timing was hard to ignore.

Months later, over dinner, I asked whether she always left parties like that.

“Arrivals are for people who need the room,” she said. “Exits are for people the room needs.”

It was a rather grand answer. It also stayed with me because, irritatingly, she had a point.

I had not expected to end this month’s Opulence essays with a piece about leaving a party. Looking back, it makes sense. We have written about silence, visibility, taste and the way people protect their time. The subjects appeared separate at first, but each of them had something to do with access and limits.

Leaving a room is a small version of the same decision. You decide that your part in something is finished, and then you act on it.

Most of us are surprisingly bad at this.

A goodbye begins at the table, moves into the kitchen and continues beside the front door. Someone offers another drink. Somebody remembers a story they meant to tell you. You say you really must go, but the words are understood as the opening of a negotiation.

Nobody wants to appear rude or ungrateful. We wait for the evening to give us a reason to leave, preferably one that nobody can argue with.

Our phones have probably made this worse. Very little ends properly online. Group conversations fade out and start again. News keeps updating. A feed has no bottom because our attention is more valuable while it remains there. We have grown used to things continuing until we pull ourselves away from them.

Perhaps that is why an ordinary departure can feel strangely difficult. We are waiting for a clear ending in a culture that rarely provides one.

None of this means leaving at ten is automatically chic. Sometimes it is just rude. If someone has invited you for dinner and you disappear before dessert, that is not self-possession. It is poor planning.

Some nights genuinely improve after midnight. A conversation can take hours to become interesting. Staying can be generous, necessary and exactly what you want.

The time itself is not the point. What matters is whether you are still choosing to be there.

There are evenings that reach their best moment at 10:45, even though the last guest remains until one. The room is still full. The drinks are still coming. Nothing has obviously gone wrong. The evening has simply given you what you came for.

We tend to keep going because stopping feels ungrateful. If something is good, surely another hour of it must be even better.

Often, it isn’t.

I do not mean that every dinner should be treated like a campaign, with your departure carefully timed to preserve the most flattering possible image of you. That sounds exhausting. But there is something to be said for leaving while you are still enjoying yourself.

People last saw you laughing. You go home still liking the evening. Neither you nor the host has to watch a good night stretch into people discussing taxis and checking tomorrow’s calendar.

My friend’s method is not complicated. She finds the host, says thank you and tells them she is going.

“Thank you, I’ve had such a lovely time. I’m going to head home.”

No invented emergency. No elaborate explanation. She is warm about it, but she does not ask for permission.

Then she actually leaves.

This is the part where most of us get caught. We say goodbye, begin another conversation and accept a final drink. Thirty minutes later, we are still standing in the hallway with one arm inside our coat.

When she says she is leaving, she means now.

After a while, her friends stopped taking it personally. They understood that she could enjoy an evening and still decide she had enjoyed enough of it. Some began inviting her earlier when they particularly wanted her there.

The older I get, the less this feels like party etiquette.

Jobs do not always announce when they have stopped being interesting. A role can look perfectly good from the outside while you quietly lose curiosity about it. Conversations begin repeating themselves. Arguments continue because neither person wants to be the one who steps away first. Projects remain open because closing them would force us to decide what they meant.

We often stay because leaving appears to pass judgement on everything that came before.

If I leave the job, perhaps taking it was a mistake. If I stop the project, perhaps the work was wasted. If I move on from a life I spent years building, perhaps I failed to appreciate it.

But something can be right for a period of your life without remaining right forever. That does not make the original decision foolish. It means time passed and you changed, which is usually what time does.

There is another side to this, of course. Restlessness is not always wisdom. A difficult month does not mean a career is finished. Boredom can pass, relationships can recover and some ideas need a long, unglamorous middle before they become worthwhile.

I do not trust anyone who claims to have a reliable formula for telling the difference. Sometimes you have to stay long enough to find out whether you are uncomfortable or genuinely finished. We all leave certain things too soon and remain in others far longer than we should.

Still, it helps to ask what is keeping you there. Do you still want the thing itself, or are you worried about what leaving might say about you?

My friend told me she makes this decision before she arrives at a party.

She does not choose an exact departure time. She thinks about the shape of the evening she wants: why she is going, whom she hopes to see and how long she would like to stay. Then she attends that version of the evening.

“The person at the party,” she said, “always votes to stay. So I don’t let her vote.”

My first thought was that this sounded a little joyless. Then I remembered every goodbye I had allowed to become another forty minutes simply because leaving required more effort than remaining.

The version of us already inside the evening is easily persuaded. Another drink sounds harmless. Someone interesting has just arrived. The room is warm, and leaving means making a decision when staying requires none.

She makes the decision before all of that begins.

It feels odd to describe this as opulence, but perhaps it should not. We usually talk about opulence as the freedom to have more: more access, more time, another bottle, another invitation.

Knowing that you have had enough is a freedom too.

I do not mean restraint for the sake of looking virtuous. Desire does not need to apologise for itself. Sometimes another hour is exactly what you want. Sometimes, though, it is only the path of least resistance.

That has been the quieter thread running through this issue. Taste is partly about what you choose, but it also appears in the moment you stop choosing. The point is not to leave everything early. It is to know that staying and leaving are both available to you.

The party recovered, by the way. Of course it did. The whole evening did not collapse because one stylish person went home; that would be a very self-important story.

The room adjusted and carried on.

For a short while, though, people felt that something had changed before they understood what it was. Her absence became noticeable because she had left while her presence still mattered.

She knew her evening had reached its end. The rest of us were waiting for the room to tell us.

Rooms rarely do.
